Hebrews 4:2-3
2 For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also; but the word they heard did not profit them, because it was not united by faith in those who heard.
3 For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said,
“As I swore in My wrath,
They shall not enter My rest,”
although His works were finished from the foundation of the world.
I have noticed more lately than I’ve ever noticed before, probably due to several celebrities dying recently, that when it seems ANYBODY dies, so many people are posting messages of “Rest in Peace” or R.I.P.
Please understand that I mean no disrespect to anyone, but we must understand that as our text today teaches, unless someone has heard the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ and placed their faith in Christ alone for salvation, there is no rest or peace for that person for all eternity.
You see, everyone is going to conciously live somewhere forever.
It will either be in the rest that comes from repenting of sin and believing or trusting or having faith in Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross and then being taken into His physical presence to live in His peace for eternity OR rejecting Jesus Christ and spending eternity out of His presence in Hell and in eternal unrest.
My prayer is that people truly will “rest in peace” that comes only through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Why? Because Jesus doesn’t just give us peace, HE IS OUR PEACE.
Ephesians 2:14
For He Himself is our peace.
