Psalm 2:1-4

1 Why are the nations in an uproar

And the peoples devising a vain thing?

2 The kings of the earth take their stand

And the rulers take counsel together

Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,

3 “Let us tear their fetters apart

And cast away their cords from us!”

4 He who sits in the heavens laughs,

The Lord scoffs at them.

Two whys;

1. Why would the nations of earth be so ignorant and arrogant as to counsel with one another, all despising Christ and His Church, with the goal of destroying both??

Well, that is the mind and heart of the god of this world, Satan himself. Since the beginning of creation, Satan has sought to lead people away from following God and His Word. He has been very succesful. However, his ultimate goal and therefore the goal of the world is to ultimately exterminate God and His followers (vv.2-3).

2. Why does the Lord laugh at this??

It is not because it is funny. It is because the very ones that He created in their own mother’s womb and gave life to, desire to destroy Him and all of those who follow Him faithfully. That’s not the worst part. They actually think it is possible!!

God “scoffs” at them.

That word means to mock. It is not the petty immature mocking of a child. It is rather a judicial mocking, because God knows the end from the beginning. God knows that the world will one day soon get its desire fulfilled to literally square of against God. He also knows how it wil go.

Oh, by the way, He has already told us as well.

(Revelation 19:11-16)

And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war.

12 His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself.

13 He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.

14 And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses.

15 From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will [d]rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the [e]wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty.

16 And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

THEN;

(vv. 19-21)

19 And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies assembled to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army.

20 And the beast was seized, and with him the false prophet who performed the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image; these two were thrown alive into the lake of fire which burns with brimstone.

21 And the rest were killed with the sword which came from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse, and all the birds were filled with their flesh.

The war that Satan has planned since creation will finally happen….AND IT IS OVER IN AN INSTANT.

You would have thought Satan and his followers would have learned at the cross and resurrection Sunday! Oh, but that shows us the depth of the depravity of those without Christ.

The knees that refuse to bend will break, but ALL WILL BOW.
